NIS Ingenieurgesellschaft mbH

Legal Profile

NIS as a private company works out specific customised solutions, independent from the interests of suppliers, which are adapted to the technical and economic requirements of the customers.
This is possible due to considerable long standing experience in the following fields :
  • Plant engineering and operation support

NIS supports power plant operators with the planning and implementation of special backfitting measures. In addition, experienced NIS experts perform optimization analyses for the total plant, for single systems or for the operation management.
NIS supports customers during licensing procedures, prepares licensing documents, works out and supplies documentation systems.
NIS has developed manufacturer independent concepts for site protection.

  • Decommissioning of nuclear facilities

Since the beginning of the 1970es, NIS has participated in actual decommissioning projects and carried out precautionary analyses for the future decommissioning of plants. NIS has thus acquired a vast experience and proved the competence of the staff. Through the achievement of many tasks NIS has pointed the way. The range of products and services offered by NIS starts with precautionary and planning conception analyses, carried out with the assistance of computer supported tools, and reaches the actual decommissioning and dismantling of complex plants. This is done by using our own software and procedures.
As holder of the licensing authorization for the dismantling of the Niederaichbach NPP (KKN), NIS acted within a consortium and actually achieved the first complete dismantling of a nuclear plant station in Europe, to a "green field". For the decommissioning and dismantling of nuclear facilities and the regeneration of nature, including the disposal of waste , NIS offers :
    • Strategic developments
    • Planning and implementation
    • Licensing procedures
    • Cost assessment support
Furthermore NIS and it's partners in European member states systematically evaluate for the European Commission individual costs, specific costs and radiation exposition from previous and current decommissioning projects. The data is collected, together with information about the constraints and a description of the processes and is documented in a relational ORACLE database. The constraints are related, for example, to the legal situation, the radiation protection regulations, the final disposal requirements and to the licensing requirements. The process is categorised by details of the individual working steps, the techniques used, the duration of each working step, the resulting radiation exposition, the accumulated secondary waste and the costs. All individual data entries can be called up under various search criteria and combined as necessary. The development of the database and the input of data were carried out within the development programme "Decommissioning of Nuclear Plants" with the support of the European Commission.
As a result the EC DB-COST is run by NIS. In the near future, working versions will also be available at the French CEA, the British BNFL and at the European Commission. The stored data comes from data from various countries, but mainly from the development programme and pilot projects of the European Commission. The data should soon be available to a wide circle of users via the Internet.
  • Reactor physics

For 30 years, together with the operating nuclear power station companies, NIS has worked out optimum strategies for practically all matters concerning the interior and exterior nuclear fuel cycle. Incore fuel management is one of the main topics in this field of activities.
Furthermore, NIS has long time experience in the nuclear design of plants and components.

  • Radiation protection and waste management

NIS develops concepts, calculates radiological data, plans and surveys the construction of facilities for the storage and processing of radwaste. NIS has developed software and computer assisted processes to optimize packaging and management of radwaste, as well as for tracking and documentation of this kind of waste. Furthermore, NIS provides services in the field of waste management and protection against radiation for the operators of nuclear facilities, using among others innovative measurement systems which NIS developed itself. During decommissioning, revision and backfitting of nuclear facilities, NIS provides support for the operational radiation protection on the site.

  • Information technology for energy and environment

NIS Information Technology is specialized in software and turnkey computer systems for process monitoring and control. NIS designs, develops and supplys systems which support nuclear power plant operation, monitor plant emissions and manage technical data. Since over two decades NIS is experienced in supplying customized solutions.

  • Quality surveillance

Due to the high safety requirements for nuclear facilities, quality assurance has
become highly significant. For more than 25 years, NIS has been providing support to customers, both at home and abroad, in the following areas:
    • Manufacturer independent quality surveillance and reception for fabrication and assembly of
      • Fuel assemblies
      • Transport and storage casks for irradiated fuel assemblies and
      • Nuclear components
    • Solution of problems resulting from experiences of the fabrication and design, as well as from experience acquired during the operation of nuclear power stations
    • Control of procedures and methods relevant to fabrication and inspection, including the control of documents such as drawings, specification sheets and preliminary control documents
    • Receiving inspections of fuel assemblies at the nuclear power station.

  • NIS Academy

NIS organizes specialized training programs, both for NIS products and for power station specific main tasks. Furthermore, special training facilities and interactive multimedia training programs (CBT) are specifically used.
Since its foundation in 1969, NIS has carried out its business to a very high standard and is certified according to DIN EN ISO 9001 and KTA 1401. NIS is supported in the execution of complex projects by 120 competent staff members, including physicists, mathematicians, computer science specialists and engineers.
