COVRA
The Central Organisation for Radioactive Waste (COVRA for
Centrale
Organisatie
Voor
Radioactief
Afval) aims at taking permanent and on an
industrial way care of all presented radioactive waste and all materials and objects,
whether they are emitting ionization radiation or not.
Special part of this goal is to obtain, collect, process, reprocess, to store temporarily as well as for longer periods, and to remove this waste within the bounds of the Government on this matter. COVRA is recognized as collecting service for radioactive waste. The reprocessed and conditioned radioactive waste (in concrete) is being stored temporarily overland on the surface, for a period of 50 to 100 years, awaiting its final storage. The activities consist of compressing solid waste, burning organic fluids, treatment of anorganic fluids, scrapping and cementation of radioactive waste. For the moment, the "High Radioactive treatment and storage building" (HABOG for Hoogradioactief Afval Behandeling- en Opslag Gebouw) for the storage of high active and heat producing waste is being build. This building is similar to building 136 at the site of BelgoProcess (in Dessel Belgium). Since April 2000, we have a building for the storage of calcinated waste products coming from the phosphates treating industry, in special 20 ft containers. The picture above shows an overall view of the offices building, the reception, the information room, the waste treatment building and the 3 storage sheds for conditioned waste. On the right side, an "artist" impression is given of the future "HABOG". On this picture, it isn't possible to see the shed for the storage of the 20 ft containers (coming soon).
